Event: Passport to Parks
Date: Anytime during April 2015- April 2016
Location: Clue #1 is:

This park, located in the Homeview neighborhood, is dedicated to a leader in the homeview community of Belmont.  His outstanding service to the city and the homeview area made Belmont a better place to live.  Today, this park hosts a playground, basketball court, and community garden. Is it: a) O’Donnell Park, b) McDougal Park, or c) Semeria Park?

Description: Passport to Parks is a year-long campaign to help you get to know your parks better! Better yet, this activity is free to you and can be done at any time. This is a great activity for families. In this campaign, you will travel within a city to find 3 parks to complete a "passport". You will find signs at each park that will tell you a clue or something interesting about the next park. Directions will also be included. The key is to travel by foot, bike, skateboard, skates, or other means of being active! Once you've reached your final destination, you will have the opportunity to submit your "passport" electronically or by mail and let us know your thoughts about your travels for the day. Event: Daytime Dance

Description: Adults 50+.  Thanks to partnerships with local agencies, we can now offer FREE daytime dances open to the public. Each month will have a special theme. Refreshments provided. Event: Physical Activity and Stress Reduction

Date: 2nd Tuesdays @ 2 January – March 2016

Location: Twin Pines Cottage

Description: Adults 50+. This FREE evidence based Nexus Program is sponsored and developed by Silverado and has been proven to improve memory, cognition, and overall health. Participants will experience first-hand the types of activities used in this program such as Zumba, chair cycling, laughter yoga, tai-chi, mediation and aromatherapy. Event: Gentle Tai Chi Chuan

Date: Tuesdays @ 9:30am March 8 – April 26 2016

Location: Twin Pines Cottage

Description: Adults 50+. The significant reduction in falls among adults who are practicing Tai Chi speaks volumes about why you should incorporate it into your exercise program. We emphasize and practice mindful moves in a non-judgmental harmonious setting. This FREE class for beginning newcomers is taught by Elliotte Mao and is offered in partnership with Sequoia Hospital-Dignity Health

Event: Swimming Pool (Summer only) 
Date: Monday - Friday @ 1-2:50 PM (Recreation Swim) and 12-2:50 PM (Lap Swim) - June - August only

Description: All ages. The  City of Belmont operates a public swimming pool during the summer season at Carlmont High School . The pool is located at 1400 Alameda de las Pulgas . The facility sports a 25-meter pool and men's and women's restroom facilities. They operate from late June to early August every year and are open for Recreation Swim from 1:00 to  2:50 p.m., and for Lap Swim from 12:00 noon-2:50 p.m., Monday through Friday during the season. Lifeguards are on duty at all times, and they strictly enforce pool rules which are posted. Summer Camps are welcome to schedule specific swim days during recreation swim by contacting the Recreation Manager. For more information about the City of Belmont's public swimming pools stop by their offices, located at 30 Twin Pines Lane between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday, or call them at 650-595-7441. Cost: $5.00/person. Discounts on admission are available with a Belmont Parks & Recreation Department Pool Swim Pass.

Description: Ages 5-18. Junior Giants is a free, non-competitive, co-ed baseball program for under-served youth, ages 5-18. Working together with local agencies, families and volunteers, Junior Giants reaches into communities and offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball during the summer while also discovering the importance of self-esteem and respect. Entering the 21st season, Junior Giants annually serves over 20,000 participants in 90+ leagues and serves as a positive alternative to unhealthy activities for at-risk youth. Junior Giants is more than just baseball and offers several distinct programs to further enrich a player’s experience. Players learn the Junior Giants Four Bases of Character Development: Confidence, Integrity, Leadership and Teamwork, as well as the importance of Education, Health and Violence Prevention. Entering the 21st season, Junior Giants annually serves over 20,000 participants in 90+ leagues and serves as a positive alternative to unhealthy activities for at-risk youth. Junior Giants is more than just baseball and offers several distinct programs to further enrich a player’s experience. Formerly known as the “Amigos” (Spanish for “Friends”) Park, this park is now named after a Menlo Park police officer who was killed while on duty in 1960. This is a park where many children and their “amigos” can enjoy playing in the field and playground. Is it: a)Jack Lyle, b)Rodney Wagner, or c)Francis Burgess?

Description: Passport to Parks is a year-long campaign to help you get to know your parks better! Better yet, this activity is free to you and can be done at any time. This is a great activity for families. In this campaign, you will travel within a city to find 3 parks to complete a "passport". You will find signs at each park that will tell you a clue or something interesting about the next park. Directions will also be included. The key is to travel by foot, bike, skateboard, skates, or other means of being active! Once you've reached your final destination, you will have the opportunity to submit your "passport" electronically or by mail and let us know your thoughts about your travels for the day. Description: Passport to Parks is a year-long campaign to help you get to know your parks better! Better yet, this activity is free to you and can be done at any time. This is a great activity for families. In this campaign, you will travel within a city to find 3 parks to complete a "passport". You will find signs at each park that will tell you a clue or something interesting about the next park. Directions will also be included. The key is to travel by foot, bike, skateboard, skates, or other means of being active! Once you've reached your final destination, you will have the opportunity to submit your "passport" electronically or by mail and let us know your thoughts about your travels for the day. This park is named after a tropical tree, which you will find in the middle of the park.  These types of trees can bear coconuts and betel nuts, as well as produce oil.  Kids also enjoy playing at the playground here. Is it: a) Palm Park, b) Hawes Park, or c) Dolphin Park?

Description: Passport to Parks is a year-long campaign to help you get to know your parks better! Better yet, this activity is free to you and can be done at any time. This is a great activity for families. In this campaign, you will travel within a city to find 3 parks to complete a "passport". You will find signs at each park that will tell you a clue or something interesting about the next park. Directions will also be included. The key is to travel by foot, bike, skateboard, skates, or other means of being active! Once you've reached your final destination, you will have the opportunity to submit your "passport" electronically or by mail and let us know your thoughts about your travels for the day. Description: Ages 5-18. Junior Giants is a free, non-competitive, co-ed baseball program for under-served youth, ages 5-18. Working together with local agencies, families and volunteers, Junior Giants reaches into communities and offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball during the summer while also discovering the importance of self-esteem and respect. Entering the 21st season, Junior Giants annually serves over 20,000 participants in 90+ leagues and serves as a positive alternative to unhealthy activities for at-risk youth. Junior Giants is more than just baseball and offers several distinct programs to further enrich a player’s experience. Description: Ages 50+ or Adults with arthritis or Parkinsons. Enhance Fitness classes are taught by Sequoia YMCA sponsored by Sequoia Healthcare District. EnhanceFitness is an hour-long, three-days-per-weekevidenced-based class designed to improve physical conditioning and to decrease risk of falling for older adults and thosewith arthritis. Studies show that regular physical activity improves overall health, memory, mood, balance, bone density, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. Description: All ages. Edgewood’s serpentine grasslands are renowned throughout California for their lush wildflower carpets and rich biodiversity. Walk starts from the Bill and Jean Lane Education Center. You might see grasslands, chaparral, coastal scrub, and foothill woodlands on a single walk! Our free walks vary according to what’s in bloom—covering about 3 miles, at a moderate pace, with frequent stops. Bring water, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunscreen, and a snack if you wish.  There is no stop for lunch, but picnic tables are usually available. Restrooms and water is only available at the main entrance. Description: All ages. To display the treasures of Edgewood all year long, Friends of Edgewood docents guide nature hikes on the third Saturday morning of each month throughout the year. Walks will take you through a number of different plant communities, with frequent stops to take a closer look at what is happening there. It may be interesting insects, plants that would otherwise be overlooked, listening for frogs, identifying butterflies, or examining spider turrets. The closer you look, the more you will see. Regardless of the season, you are likely to learn all kinds of fascinating things that you didn’t know before. Our free walks cover about 3 miles, at a moderate pace. Many birds make their homes in Edgewood Park, such as the Red-shouldered Hawk and the Western Bluebird.  During the fall and winter, other birds may just be passing through on their migration to somewhere else. All are a joy to watch and hear. Join a knowledgeable Audubon docent for an early morning bird walk. Hike through oak woodlands and natural meadows. Look and listen for California Thrasher, Wrentit, Oak Titmouse, Red-shouldered Hawk, Western Bluebirds, and many more. In addition to spotting birds, find out about their habits, preferences, and how they live. This 3 to 4 mile hike traverses gentle hills and lasts 3 hours. Heavy rain cancels. Description: Ages 5 - 12. We invite teachers and students to participate in a hands-on experiential outdoor education program at Edgewood Natural Preserve. This unusual resource so close to your school offers special opportunities for exploration and understanding of the natural environment. The unique serpentine communities distinguish Edgewood as an ideal location to understand and experience endangered species first-hand. Field trip opportunities can be made for the following groups: 1) Docent-led discovery walks at Edgewood Preserve for elementary school groups, using a hands-on, interactive approach. Our intention is to correlate field trip programs with California science content standards, including the concepts of ecosystems, life cycles, adaptations for survival, food chains, plant and animal interrelationships, and nutrient recycling by decomposers, demonstrating their particular application to the natural communities at Edgewood. 2) Field trips for high school or middle school science classes, which may be combined with habitat restoration or environmental science projects. 3) Boy Scout and Girl Scout field trips, which can be associated with earning badges. 4) Tours for homeschoolers or special children’s groups. Description: All ages. Zumba is a Latin inspired dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez in Colombia in the 1990s. Zumba involves dance and aerobic elements.  Unlike typical dance class for counts are used, Zumba involves following the music with repetitive movements. Zumba's choreography incorporates hip hop, samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, martial arts, and some Bollywood and belly dance moves. Stepping On is an evidence-based program for older adults at risk for falls that has been shown to reduce falls by 31%.  Learn strength and balance exercises, discuss risk factors such as home safety and footwear and hear from professionals about medications, vision and more.  Guest speakers include a physical therapist, pharmacist, and vision specialist.  Program meets for 7 two-hour sessions and a booster session is held three months later.  A home visit by a licensed occupational therapist is offered.  Space is limited to 14 participants. Working together with local agencies, families and volunteers, Junior Giants reaches into communities and offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball during the summer while also discovering the importance of self-esteem and respect. Entering the 21st season, Junior Giants annually serves over 20,000 participants in 90+ leagues and serves as a positive alternative to unhealthy activities for at-risk youth. Junior Giants is more than just baseball and offers several distinct programs to further enrich a player’s experience. This coast-side park used to be San Mateo’s landfill from 1930’s to 1982 and is named after an aquatic mammal. Is it: a) Coyote Point, b) Seal Point Park, or c) Sea Lion Point?

Description: Passport to Parks is a year-long campaign to help you get to know your parks better! Better yet, this activity is free to you and can be done at any time. This is a great activity for families. In this campaign, you will travel within a city to find 3 parks to complete a "passport". You will find signs at each park that will tell you a clue or something interesting about the next park. Directions will also be included. The key is to travel by foot, bike, skateboard, skates, or other means of being active! Once you've reached your final destination, you will have the opportunity to submit your "passport" electronically or by mail and let us know your thoughts about your travels for the day.
