Behavioral Health & Recovery Services Intern/Trainee Program

San Mateo County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) offers comprehensive behavioral health services to adults with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring substance abuse concerns and severely emotionally-disturbed youth and families. We offer services to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults in inpatient, outpatient, and outreach programs, through our multidisciplinary staff of Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Social Workers, MFTs, Interns, Trainees, and Peer Support positions.

Placement Opportunities

Some opportunities are with our Regional Clinics, which serve adults and youth within a geographic area. Other opportunities are with units that serve specialized populations of older adults, adults and youth throughout the County. Along with the required supervision hours, trainees have weekly didactic seminars and are included in clinical case consultations and in-service trainings.

San Mateo County's training programs provide training opportunities for approximately 60-75 psychology interns, masters-level trainees, alcohol and drug certificate program students, and psychiatric residents each year. Students are welcome to attend any of the five didactic training seminars throughout the county. There are bi-monthly psychiatric grand rounds that are open to all staff and students. Regular in-service training and specialized staff training are also available for students to attend.

Cultural Competency Stipends

Cultural Competency Stipends are available for those who are able to help provide services to underserved populations within our system of Older Adult, Adult, and Youth Services. Each stipend is up to $5,000 for a student who works 24 hours or more in their placement. Stipends will be pro-rated if the student works between 20-24 hours per week. (Students who work less than 20 hours per week at their placement do not qualify for the stipend).  Recipients of the stipend will also be required to participate in a Health Equity Initiative project/program as negotiated between the trainee/intern and the HEI co-chair.
